Direct-to-Film (DTF) Printing Overview
How It Works
DTF printing is a heat transfer process that delivers high-quality, full-colour prints on a variety of fabrics.
The process involves the following steps:
- Design Preparation – A digital design is created and printed onto a special PET film using a DTF printer with CMYK and white inks.
- Adhesive Application – A fine adhesive powder is evenly applied to the printed design while the ink is still wet.
- Curing – The film with adhesive is heat-cured to set the powder and ink, preparing it for transfer.
- Heat Transfer – The film is placed onto the fabric and pressed using a heat press at high temperature and pressure.
- Peeling & Finishing – After cooling, the PET film is peeled away, leaving a vibrant and durable print on the fabric.
This method results in a flexible, soft print that maintains colour vibrancy and durability over time.
Key Advantages of DTF Printing
Versatility
DTF printing works on a wide range of fabrics, including cotton, polyester, blends, denim, and even leather.
Unlike DTG (which is best on cotton) or sublimation (which requires polyester),
DTF allows for high-quality prints on virtually any material.
Print Quality & Durability
DTF produces vibrant, high-resolution prints with excellent colour accuracy and detail, including fine lines and gradients. The heat-transfer process ensures the design bonds well to the fabric, making it resistant to cracking, peeling, or fading, even after multiple washes.
Cost-Effectiveness
Since DTF eliminates the need for expensive screens, emulsions, and pre-treatment solutions, it is a cost-effective option, especially for small orders and one-off designs. This makes it ideal for custom and on-demand apparel businesses.
Design Flexibility
With DTF, intricate and multicolour designs are easily achievable without concerns about colour separations or layering issues. It supports full-colour gradients, fine details, and white ink printing on dark fabrics, providing designers with greater creative freedom.
Washability & Feel
DTF prints have a soft, flexible texture that blends well with the fabric, ensuring a comfortable feel.
The adhesive used in the process enhances wash resistance, helping designs maintain their vibrancy and longevity over time.
